Four Essential Practice Tips

For amateurs ad juniors alike, research shows that the brain is more important than what happens with your body.

You could play golf all day, but if you aren't intensely focused on doing a specific thing better than last time, you'll find it difficult to improve. Here are our four areas to focus on.

you'll find it difficult to improve. Here are our four areas to focus on.

Deliberate Practice is Personalised to You

What you need to work on is unique to you. Few everyday golfers understand how to practice in a way that leads to actual improvement. You need a personalised plan that stretches your comfort zone. Only you, and your golf coach if you have one, knows what that is.

Deliberate Practice Should Push you Just Beyond your Abilities

This part of practice is all about taking a step outside of your comfort zone, but not a giant leap. If you've mastered basic chips from clean lines, that doesn't mean it's time to hit Phil Mickelson style flop shots! You'll just blade ball after ball and feel lost. Instead, graduate to pitch shots, or start to hit three quarter shots that run. Give yourself a score to beat and try beating that mark each time you challenge yourself.

Deliberate Practice Must be Repeated at High Volume

The best performers repeat their practice at stultifying length. Sam Snead hit balls all day, then practised by his car's headlights at night. Pete Maravich shot baskets in the school gym from dawn until dusk. We've all heard that practise makes perfect, but now brain science reveals that high volume repetition is critical.

Deliberate Practice Requires Continual, Specific Feedback

You can't always rely on yourself to know what you're doing. A good coach is always an ideal solution; another option is watching and analysing videos of yourself.
